A key part of the walk is the climb up the saddle between the two non-dormant volcanoes Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. The weather s extremely variable, suffering distinct microclimates. The weather can turn from clear sky to blizzard within two hours in a worst case scenario. Consquently, the walker is well-advised to BE PREPARED.
